Too formal for a robe, too relaxed for a dinner jacket? Woodford Reserve and Australian resortwear label COMMAS think they have found the answer. Deciding what to pour when friends come over is usually the enjoyable part. Deciding what to wear can be trickier. Woodford Reserve has taken aim at this familiar hosting dilemma with the Host Tux, a limited-edition garment created in partnership with Australian menswear label COMMAS.

Sitting somewhere between traditional tailoring and luxurious loungewear, the Host Tux is designed for evenings when a suit feels excessive but answering the door in a dressing gown feels a little too casual. Made from linen twill in a soft dune colour, it combines the notch lapel of a dinner jacket with the relaxed tie front of COMMAS’ signature robe. The result is an easy-going alternative for hosts who want to look as though they have made an effort — without appearing to have tried too hard.

“You can always tell when a host is comfortable; the whole room relaxes with them,” said COMMAS founder and creative director Richard Jarman. “For hosting at home, the answer was something in between. Not a robe. Not a suit. A bit of both.” The collaboration reflects the increasingly relaxed way Australians entertain at home.

Formal dinner parties have largely given way to leisurely afternoons, casual suppers and drinks around the kitchen bench — occasions that still feel special, even if nobody is polishing the silver. For Woodford Reserve, the partnership is also a way of placing bourbon within that more considered style of home entertaining. “The best moments aren’t always the biggest celebrations,” said Woodford Reserve brand manager Eulalie Lazaro.

“They’re often the casual get-togethers where friends come together over great conversation and a thoughtfully made drink.” The Host Tux is priced at A$500 and will be sold in strictly limited numbers through the COMMAS website. Buyers will also receive access to an exclusive offer on a bottle of Woodford Reserve.

Whether the Host Tux becomes the new uniform of the home bartender remains to be seen. But for anyone who has stood in front of a wardrobe wondering whether guests warrant a jacket or will forgive pyjamas, Woodford Reserve may have found an unexpectedly stylish middle ground.
