Family-owned WA distillery claims top honours at International Whisky Comp
A family-owned, small-batch whisky distillery from WA’s Great Southern region has been recognized on the world stage, taking home top honors at the 2026 International Whisky Competition.

"What makes this achievement even more special is that we're a small, independent distillery in regional Western Australia. Less than a year after opening our cellar door, we're standing alongside some of the most recognised whisky producers in the world – from multinational brands to craft spirits."
Nullaki Distilling Company's Single Malt - Tawny Cask 17 received Australia’s Gold Medal at the prestigious US-based spirits competition, which follows a strict Olympic-style medal system, awarding only one Gold, Silver, and Bronze per category.
The single malt’s score of 91.83 was Australia’s highest whisky score and 25th in the world – a notable feat for the small, independent distillery, which only opened its cellar door in Denmark in November 2025.
Donovan Smith, General Manager of The Nullaki Distilling Company, called the recognition “an incredible honour.”
"This isn't simply another medal,” the GM said. “It validates the passion, patience and attention to detail that has gone into every cask we've laid down since the beginning.

The award continues strong momentum for The Nullaki Distilling Company, which won Gold for its first cask strength whisky release at the 2026 World Whisky Awards, and Best Australian Young Spirit at the 2025 World Whisky Awards.
The distillery attributes its distinctive regional character to its south coast setting, where the cool maritime influence and surrounding forests shape the spirit's profile.
Visitors to the Nullaki Distillery cellar door in Denmark can sample the range, while taking in Southern Ocean views from its location on Mount Shadforth.
While Cask 17 isn’t widely available, subsequent casks of Nullaki Single Malt are available at an RRP of $149 per 700ml.
